With profound sadness, we remember Joan Allison, a dedicated member of the Kinbridge Community Association, who passed away on May 21st, 2024. Joan’s legacy is marked by her unwavering commitment to community service and her tireless advocacy for the well-being of children and families.

Joan’s involvement with Kinbridge began in 2005 when it was still known as the Christopher Champlain Community Centre. Her passion for social work and community welfare was evident in every role she undertook, from her early days as a board member to her many years of active volunteerism. Joan’s efforts were not limited to attending meetings; she immersed herself in the needs of the community, always seeking ways to make a positive impact.

Leslie Tinning, a fellow board member, encapsulated Joan’s dedication: “Joan always championed the needs of community members and would collaboratively work with staff, partners, and others to make sure that those needs were addressed. She will truly be missed.” Joan’s approach was hands-on and inclusive, ensuring that every voice was heard and every concern was addressed.

Former Executive Director Joe-Ann McComb shared heartfelt reflections on Joan’s remarkable character: “Joan was one of those rare people, selfless, with a positive outlook even when dealing with very challenging issues both in her work and volunteerism. Her energy was a special energy that you wanted to be around. Laughter, down to earth, and genuine. You felt like you mattered when you were around Joan.” Joan’s leadership was characterized by her ability to inspire and uplift those around her, creating a supportive and collaborative environment.

Joan’s advocacy extended beyond her board duties. She was actively involved in various community initiatives, always focusing on improving the quality of life for children and families. Her background in social work, with a BA in Psychology and a Master’s in Social Work, provided her with the expertise and compassion needed to address complex social issues effectively. Joan’s work at Family and Children Services of Waterloo further underscored her lifelong dedication to child welfare and family support.

Joan’s impact on the Kinbridge Community Association is immeasurable. Her legacy is one of compassion, dedication, and an unwavering belief in the power of community.
